Have been into Cinnamon Square and other coffee shops in Riki High Street and the service doesn't come anywhere close to the service my family and I receive at The Fat Aubergine. It means a lot to me but especially my children, who are always looked after with colouring sheets and crayons and a free lolly on their way out. It wouldn't be natural if we all thought the same but in my opinion customer service goes a long way. C

I've not got a Kindle, but have got the Kindle app on my iPad. Just as you say, it's great being able to download a book within a minute of wanting it. And its nice to have a few books with you that don't weigh a ton.

But I much prefer physical books. I like the experience of turning the page, flicking to any photos and back again. And after a day staring at a computer screen, it's a nice change looking at a book rather than another screen. To be fair, I hear that the Kindle reader is better than the iPad for reading.

What did you decide?

Hi - I am moving from Harrow to Chesham and think this is a great and informative blog, keep up the good work !

With regards to the "CAMRA" pub this is the "The Land of Liberty, Peace & Plenty" if you like good beer it is well worth searching out. It is a bit out of the way but it is reachable from Chorleywood tube - About 20 mins albeit uphill ! There are (very infrequent ) buses from Rickmansworth that drop you off at the Stag. With a real fire in the winter and some very well kept beer it has got to be one of the best pubs (for beer) in the area.

Went into The Fat Aubergine today for the first time, to add some variety to my usual M&S lunching.
They had a great selection of salads that were freshly prepared in front of me.
Healthier & more varied than Cinnamon Square's salads, which are delicious but laden with mayonnaise.

I'll be going back soon to try out the rest of them.

The main consideration in estimating costs should be based on gross income and what percentage of this can be used to cover essential expenses. At the end of the day you have to cut your coat according to the cloth.
You need to take into consideration the fact that the global economy up until 2015 and maybe beyond is due to undergo major changes.

Hi Richard,

In short, I don't know all that much, other than what can be found in the censuses and other documents. John K was born in Littlebourne in 1826. His father May (sic) Inge was also a brewer. I puzzled over the 'Kingsford' bit of his name for ages, because it's not a married-in maiden name reference or anything like that. I think May worked with an Edward Kingsford, who may well have been John K's godfather. John's definitely still listed as an active brewer in 1881, but he's retired by 1891. Didn't know he went bankrupt, but it explains why his son Walter ended up as a schoolmaster.

You mention the name John Kingsford Inge. Whhat do you know about him? My wife's gg grandfather William Gardener (1816-1905) acquired Littlebourne Brewery in Kent when John Kingsford Inge went bankrupt. I am interested in discovering a bit more about the circumstances, as it seems it was not a simple purchase of the brewery.
PS I was thinking much the same about the census!

I used to love Wendover Woods as a kid - we were "Hyde
Heathens" so it was fairly close - there was an orienteering course
you could do that was fairly easy with a map. But no cafe in those
days - a thermos flask of tea was where it was at!
